Bill Slattery is the recipient of the 2020 Ken Seymour Memorial Award for Trainer of the Year. The Ken Seymour Memorial Award is to be presented to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the ideals of safety for all participants, enjoyment, fair play, sportsmanship, education and honesty in the game. The award has been established to honour a tremendous hockey person who was very involved and interested in minor hockey.
When most think of a ‘hockey trainer’ they think of someone who shows up to the rink, steps on the bench and is prepared to help out those who may need it. In this case, on our team our trainer has that and MUCH MORE!
Equipped with not only a First Aid Kit, but a toolbox on wheels that has everything that a player would need and more. From extra bolts and screws, to a variety of colors of tape ‘Wild Bill’ has it all! Our 07 group (and parents) refer to Bill as ‘Wild Bill’ as there is never a moment Bill isn’t racing to fill water bottles, tape the boys sticks before every game, make sure the music playlist is blaring in the dressing room or running around to locate a missing piece of equipment. Bill’s pace is as fast as his speech, his energy and passion is truly enjoyed by each and everyone of our players & parents. The boys know they can always rely on Bill for anything they need both at the rink and outside the hockey arena. We on the 07 team are convinced that Bill traded in his wife’s car and purchased a minivan just so that he could ensure that as many players as possible never miss those early 4:30 practices!
During our first tournament Bill hit the road after our first game to find a stick locker for in the hallway so that the boys sticks were neatly lined up, taped and ready to grab before hitting the ice. Prior to games Bill can also be found leading warm up with the boys and let’s not forget joining in with the boys for they’re off ice sessions at Get Cronk’d. Bills dedication to the team is second to non, our 07 boys truly enjoy having Bill in the dressing room and on the bench. Whether it be dealing with a loss or celebrating a victory our boys know they can always count on ‘Wild Bill!’
